Norwich is located in East Anglia’s Norfolk County, about 115 miles northeast of London. Despite being far from the main tourist routes, the trip is well worth it!

There at present about 235,000 people living in Norwich. Norfolk’s largest city strikes the ideal balance between being too big and too small. There are all the amenities without the crippling hustle and bustle of large cities.

It’s really amazing! I’ve had friends come over who didn’t have high expectations and ended up staying longer. Cobblestone streets and hip independent stores combine mediaeval and modern elements in a unique way. Also, the people there are really friendly. The Guardian named it one of their “Unexpected UK City Breaks for 2025” in January, and it seems to be right on the money.

From London Liverpool Street Station, the train ride takes less than two hours. National Express coaches are less expensive, but they take longer. Norwich Airport now provides more connections to Europe than it did last year for travellers arriving from abroad thanks to the addition of new flights to Berlin and Amsterdam in March. You can easily drive up the A11 if you have a car.

Not really, unless you intend to visit the Broads or the Norfolk coast frequently. I don’t have one here! You can traverse the city centre on foot in thirty minutes. The new First Bus app, which displays arrivals in real time, enhanced the buses last autumn. There are also many taxis; trustworthy local companies Beeline Taxis, and ABC Taxis are available.

Despite the recent milder winters, always pack layers! Spring can be lovely, despite its unpredictability. Summers rarely get hot and are usually pleasant. It’s really one of the driest places in the UK, despite what residents may say about the rain! Last summer, we had some July temperatures of 30°C.

Every budget can find something they like. If you want to spend a lot of money, the Assembly House is stunning. The Maids Head is a mid-range hotel that bills itself as the oldest in England. Beautiful rooms in a renovated mediaeval building can be found at the new Monastery Hotel, which opened in Cathedral Close last October. Premier Inn and Travelodge are dependable choices for less expensive lodging. For something with more personality, try The Georgian Townhouse.

• Children adore the Puppet Festival, which returns from February 15–22 and features puppet performances and workshops throughout the city.
• The main event is the Norfolk & Norwich Festival, which takes place from May 9 to May 25. If you believe it, it has been held since 1772! A wonderful blend of outdoor performances, theatre, and music.
• This year’s Norwich Pride is on July 26; the atmosphere is always fantastic.
• Emerging bands perform in smaller venues during the Sound & Vision Festival in October.
• The mulled wine alone makes the late November through early December Christmas Market worth a visit!
• Cathedral’s new light show, which runs through February, is amazing.

In January, taxi fares increased once more (what doesn’t these days?). Depending on traffic, a quick trip around the city centre costs between £6 and £12. It will cost around £12 to £22 to travel to the suburbs, such as Thorpe or Sprowston. Runs to and from the airport cost about £25. Black taxis are typically a little more expensive than minicabs that are reserved in advance.

Yes, you can hail the black taxis anywhere. Taxi ranks can be found at Castle Mall, on Prince of Wales Road, and outside the train station. But to be honest, I hardly ever bother reporting a cab anymore since Uber finally arrived last year and all of the local taxi companies now have good apps. Booking in advance is much simpler, especially on rainy weekends!

The majority of residents use the Goldstar or ABC Taxis apps. Bolt and Uber now operate here as well. Or give ABC a call the old-fashioned way at 01603 666333. You typically receive a discount on your first ride through the apps.

Almost everything at this point. All taxis accept cards, and cash is still accepted. The majority of drivers have contactless, and you can pay with your phone using the apps. According to one driver, roughly 70% of his clients now use contactless.

Yes, last year the council pushed for more cars that could accommodate wheelchairs. They are undoubtedly available from Norwich Airport Taxis and ABC Taxis. When making a reservation, simply specify your needs, and the appropriate vehicle will be sent.

If you ask politely, some drivers will! It’s convenient that Goldstar recently added bike-friendly vehicles with racks. However, it might cost a few pounds more. It’s better to call and enquire than to merely hope.

Now, the free WiFi coverage is quite good. “NorwichFreeWiFi” is available throughout the centre, particularly in the vicinity of the Market, Chapelfield Gardens, and The Forum. Prior to the January upgrade, it was a little erratic. Although not very quick, it’s adequate for simple browsing and mapping.

Norwich is becoming more environmentally friendly! In March, the Beryl bike program was extended once more to include e-bikes and small green bikes that can be picked up and dropped off throughout the city. Their location is displayed by the app. Last fall, Prince of Wales Road finally saw the addition of bike lanes. The majority of public parking lots now have electric vehicle charging stations.

• Norwich Castle, in the middle of the city, just had major restorations.
• Modern glass icon, The Forum, hosts regular shows and has a great café.
• Sainsbury Centre has it if you like excellent art.
• Norwich Market is excellent for lunch; check Falafel & Friends or Bun Box.
• Because they are packed with independent shops located in mediaeval structures, the Lanes are far more fascinating than the mall!
• Hidden behind the Catholic cathedral, Plantation Garden, a Victorian garden, is the undiscovered jewel.
• Stroll along the Wensum River and enjoy a pint at the Ribs of Beef pub.
• If you enjoy football, go to a Norwich City match at Carrow Road.
• The brand-new Cultural Quarter close to the train station opened in February with a trendy mix of eateries, stores, workspaces and offices.
